Laurent war born in Whitehorse on August 28th, 1919.
His mother, Marie Ange Cyr, was married twice. She had two
children from the first marriage: Aline and Wilbrod. She had
five children from her second marriage to Antoine Cyr: Laurent,
Lomer, Gloria, Paul and Lii. |

Laurent married Corinne on November 11th, 1943. They
had three children,
Noelle, Terence and Raymond. Laurent worked in transportation
most of his life with brief spells in the correction system and
in groceries. Laurent was very involved in many organizations.
He was a life member of the Whitehorse Curling Club. He was in
the Elks before they started their own building. Cyr was also a
city alderman in the 1970s as well as an original director of
the Yukon Foundation. He was a founding member of the Yukon
Transportation Museum. He was inducted into the Yukon
Transportation Hall of Fame in 2004 for beginning one of the
first trucking companies in Whitehorse. Among his extensive
community involvement, he was a mainstay in the YOOP (Yukon
Order Of Pioneers). For several years, he served as president of
the order's grand lodge and altogether he served with the
organization for well over 50 years. Laurent was one of the
original directors of the Yukon Foundation.
Cyr was also one of the earlier members of the Yukon Historical
Society which was responsible for the creation of the MacBride
Museum. For more than 30 years, the local historian volunteered
his work for the museum, and served as president of the
organization for many of those years. Laurent was on the board
of directors of the National Museum.
Cyr would always make a point of visiting the pioneers when they
were in the hospital. "He was always there, and people really
enjoyed his visits."
Cyr and his late wife were presented with the Commissioner's
Award in January 2002 for their public service to the territory.
Laurent is survived by three children: Noelle and AI Misko of
Edmonton, Alberta; Terence and Patti of Cornwall, Ontario;
Raymond and Darlene of Edmonton, Alberta. He is survived by 5
grandchildren: Ken Kavanagh of Brampton, Ontario; Kelly (Misko)
and Sizaldo Medeiros of Calgary, Alberta. Brian and Corinne
Misko of Coquitlam, British Columbia; Nadine Cyr of Edmonton,
Alberta; and Valerie (Misko) and Mark Bielenda of Edmonton
Alberta. Laurent is survived by one brother, Paul and one
sister, Lil Newton of Kelowna B.C. He is also survived by
three great grandchildren; Rebecca and Allison Medeiros of
Calgary, Alberta and Kassandra Misko of Coquitlam, British
Columbia as well as 61 nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
