The Ladies Auxiliary of the Yukon Order of Pioneers

In 1971 "The Ladies Auxiliary of the Yukon Order of Pioneers" was started. Shortly after they started the "Friendship Hour", for all seniors. This became a very popular gathering. Members transported seniors that needed rides. We took turns supplying tea and coffee with sandwiches and goodies, etc. The first hour we played Bingo. If someone wanted to play cards, this was available too.

We served tea during the last hour. Several members took turns working each Tuesday afternoon. Other members came and visited.

Special events took place on special days; Valentine's, Easter, Halloween and of course, Christmas, which was a large group. These gatherings were all held at the Elks Hall. At Christmas time they had their tree up and we supplied a small gift for everyone. At that time most of the seniors lived in their own homes or apartments, such as the Alexander St. Home, Macauley Lodge and Greenwood. Gifts consisted of the usual items; like potholders, tea towels etc., plus cookies and candy.

Entertainment was often supplied by school children from our local schools. Also outings to the school took place, where the students entertained them. Bus trips were very popular too.

From this came the start of the "Golden Age Society" and the "Council on Aging". The "Golden Age" was formed in 1976 and from this group came the "Yukon Council on Aging".

"The Ladies Auxiliary to the Yukon Order of Pioneers" is very proud and pleased to be involved with the starting of these organizations. They still are very active and willing to help out with the seniors and these two organizations at any time.

Please note: In case you are wondering why your names are not mentioned it is because there were so many willing workers, that rather than having anybody hurt by their name being missed, no one is mentioned.

Margaret Yeulet, Past President
