OBJECTIVES

To promote the interests of the Golden Age Society and to provide for the recreation of the members and to promote and afford the opportunity for friendly and social activities, promote, support and advance cultural, recreational, athletic and charitable activities in the Yukon.

SHORT HISTORY      by Corinne Cyr

The Golden Age Society was organized in 1976 to provide a drop-in centre for Whitehorse seniors, and any visiting seniors. The group rented a building on Wood Street for 18 years, paying the operating and maintenance costs through many fund raising events. In 1996, they bought into the Sports Yukon Building on 4th Avenue and now own 1/3 of the footage of the building.
The facility is open four afternoons a week: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Activities include shuffleboard, line dancing, floor curling, crib, bingo, whist and pool and others. The Golden Age Society provides a potluck dinner on the last Monday of every month. The potluck dinner on March 26th, 2001 was our 25. Anniversary.
We also have 2- or 3-day trips every summer to other Yukon communities.
