Follow up on Survey of Active Living, Seniors and Elders in
Yukon Communities |
|
January 18, 2008 |
| |
| Some
of you living in Yukon Communities have shown some interest in
getting more information about some of the activities sponsored
by ElderActive Recreation Association (ERA).
One of our
mandates is to form a "Team Yukon" every two years to
participate in the Canada 55+ Games. We are currently in the
planning stages for the August 26 - 31, 2008 Games in Dieppe, NB
(information enclosed).
You will note that the deadline for sending in an "I Might Go"
form is fast approaching for the end of February. Any playoffs
required will be in April or May, 2008. Membership in ERA is
mandatory to go to the Games. 2008 membership is $ 10.00 (application form enclosed).
Our Yukon Games,
held twice a year, coincide with our Annual and/or Semi-Annual
General Meetings, usually in May and October. These are usually
a two day event, with meeting on the Friday morning;
games/activities Friday afternoon, and supper at the Golden Age
Society on Friday evening. We have games on the Saturday at the
Canada Games Center; which usually include carpet bowling, floor
shuffleboard, washer toss, rattlesnake and new for 2008 AGM will
be indoor lawn bowling. Members can apply for a travel allowance
as specified in our Travel Subsidy policy (copy enclosed). Some
years we are able to offer a room allowance as well.
Over the past
year, with the assistance of a financial grant from New
Horizons, we have been able to develop a website that includes
four Yukon Senior groups.
www.yukon-seniors-and-elders.org
We
have, over the past few years, been able to subsidize the
placement of carpet bowling equipment in those communities that
were interested, an we try to sponsor at least one carpet
bowling tournament per year, when we invite teams from the
communities to travel to Whitehorse and have a friendly
competition against each other. As well, teams from Whitehorse
have travelled to other areas to have a friendly social
tournament with people there.
We
have recently reviewed the "Survey of Active Living, Seniors and
Elders in Yukon Communities", and discovered that many
communities would like to have Tai Chi instruction. As a result
we are sponsoring a seminar so supply basic training for Tai Chi
instructors on March 1st and 2nd, 2008.
Details of this are being sent to all communities separately.

| Sports Day in Teslin |
|
April 3rd,
2008 |
| Nineteen people
met at the Golden Age Society by 8:00 am on April 3rd to
journey to Teslin by bus. The bus stopped at various
locations along the Alaska Highway to pick up three couples
and one single person before reaching Jakes Corner. At Jakes
Corner, we picked up four people from Atlin and five from
Tagish communities, and then carried on to Teslin arriving
just after 10:00 am. We were treated to coffee and hot cross
buns/muffins to boost our energy level before we started
playing games. There
were enough people to form six teams for carpet bowling,
while the balance of the seniors played whist, crib or
euchre of watched carpet bowling. We played one game of
carpet bowling before lunch. Lunch consisted of two
varieties of homemade soup, cold cuts, cheese, vegetable
trays, stuffed eggs, potato salad, coffee and juice.
We carried on playing at one
o'clock with numerous shouts and cheers from various teams
especially when someone knocked the jack off the carped or
made delicate shots and scored points. |
| Had a break with
pie, fruit jellied dessert and whip cream. Boy, do the
Teslin group know how to feed us! We carried on with a third
game of carped bowling, card games carried on as well.
Winners were announced with
Team Three being first, Team Two being second with prize
money being awarded to each team member. |
| Card game
winners were: |
Whist: |
Eileen Boyle &
June Raymond |

|
|
| Marg Dunn
graciously thanked the Teslin group for hosting such a
wonderful day. We quickly made our departure and went over
to the Yukon Motel to pay a visit to the WildLife Museum.
Ben Schoneville had previously checked into this possibility
and we all thought it was a great idea. The wild life
animals were very nicely displayed with a written
description for each bird or animal. We all thoroughly
enjoyed the visit and made our way back to the bus and
headed for home. We dropped the groups off at Jakes Corner
and along the Alaska Highway before reaching Whitehorse at
5:30 pm. A total of 47 people attended the Sports Day. |
